That isn't a chessboard, it's the solar panel
Hot off the press is the new Samsung NC215S, another netbook that is pretty standard. It has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel matte display, 1GB of RAM, and either a dual-core Atom N570 or a N455. The key feature that sets this netbook apart from the crowd though are the solar cells built into the lid. It is claimed to provide 14.5 hours worth of power in hybrid mode.
The question is… does it make any sense?
Sure, it would if you never bring your charger around. You can leave it in the hot, intense sun for two hours, and it will give you an hour’s worth of power, but who would want to sit in the sun in the hottest of summers? And then there’s the question of glare and brightness issues when using it in the sun.
Wait, is there a webcam?
I applaud Samsung’s bravado in taking the first step to green computing and this is a pretty cool gadget actually. But I need to be convinced that the solar panel is efficacious – after all, if you’re gonna be using your charger to run the netbook all the time, you might as well just buy a cheaper netbook.
