FREE – Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory on a netbook
I remembered back in the day when Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was released as a free multiplayer game. It was probably the most addictive game for a while, because of its innovations not seen in other games.
Although this is not a full-fledged game, ET still offers quite a lot for a free game. In this game, you play as either the Axis or the Allies and both teams have different objectives – usually capture, destroy, activate an objective – over six default maps that are classified into two campaigns – the North African and European campaign.

It's a great game, but it doesn't really work on a netbook and servers aren't newbie friendly either.
Back then, it was one of the best games to have, because its graphics was great, the XP concept kept you hooked and the online interaction and team-based gaming was what kept you coming back day after day.
Today, ET still has a sizeable online community, and can be downloaded free off this link. Some caveats, though. This game suffers from major slowdowns in normal online games when there are battles even at the Fastest setting which lowers the quality to the lowest and runs at 640×480.
Also, many years have passed and many mods have been created by the fan community. This is a double-edged sword because while the mods do make the game better – in a sense, you get to save your XP, for example, they do require quite a significant investment in time to download them. Some servers do not offer downloads too, which means that you’ll have to keep trying until you find one that will offer the download.
Once in game, you’d think it’s all jolly and well, but then you’ll find that playing this game on a small screen is actually quite difficult because you can’t see the enemy. And then there’s the low FPS which makes the game terribly unplayable.
Like
Extremely good blend of FPS-teamwork-XP that keeps you playing
Great online community and interactivity
Dislike
Doesn’t play well on a netbook
Not inviting to a newbie with an unmodded ET
Not the same game as it was back then with all the mods
Verdict
Forget it on a netbook. You could try it on a more powerful computer which should get the FPS up to playable rates.
Gameplay: Excellent
Graphics: Unplayable (5-10fps on a online FPS)
Work needed to get game to play: Unresolvable
