C&C in your browser. True story.

The original Command and Conquer was a groundbreaking series that was first launched in 1995… and essentially stole my gaming attention all the way up to C&C Generals. Nonetheless, the first game was a great introduction to the world of strategy gaming and even now, looking back, it’s a primitive game where might is often right. And with the earlier C&C games, might was more or less centered around how many units you have. Not that this particular fact would cause the game to lose its appeal, particularly if you were born in my generation where this game also serves its double purpose of being nostalgia.

Aditya Ravi Shankar, a programmer from Bangalore, India, re-dubbed the good ol’ original C&C, and put it online for everyone to try. Right now, it’s more of an introduction to what HTML5 and Javascript can do – in a sense, a geeky novelty – but Shankar mentions that, “ I intend to develop this game further – improving the AI, pathfinding, adding more units and levels.”

Indeed, as of now, v0.3d only allows you five buildings, two units, and a limited objective of building your small base up, amassing the tanks and destroying turrets and tanks littered around the map. It’s not really engaging as the full game would be. However, as a time-waster, nostalgia-inducer, this great game is in fact one of the most precious things I have come across in a while.

So, if you’re interested, head over here and try it out yourself. I haven’t had luck playing this on Firefox, but Chrome worked perfectly fine. The game is not perfect yet, so expect irregularities. This little app made by Shankar really makes me want to go get the full version and see how it runs on the netbook.
