Terraria Reviewed on a netbook
What is addiction? With regards to games, it’s a feeling of wanting to skip breakfast and get a fix of whatever is afflicting you. That’s the same case with Terraria. It’s an addiction. In the first few days that you buy the game, it will feel almost weird that all you want to do is to go out and kill slimes, zombies, demons and the undead.
Terraria is a game that combines different elements, but at its heart is a RPG. You play this pixely 2D character that you get to customise, and the first order of the day is to build a house by mining materials. After this is done, your next immediate goal is to gather more materials to craft better items and armour for yourself. Then there’s also the exploration of many different areas above and underground.
A key concept in this game is the crafting. Crafting is where you use material which you have mined and combine them to build better armour and items. So if you have a lot of Gold Bars, you can use them to make Gold-grade tools such as Gold Broadswords, Pickaxes, etc.
And then with these higher-level tools, you will be able to go deeper and further into the Terraria world. And the deeper you go, you’ll find increasingly difficult enemies and better rewards.
And then the cycle repeats. That’s why the game is so addictive and replayable. You’ll just keep wanting to find more materials, explore new caves and new floating islands, and kill new enemies.
Multiplayer adds another dimension to the game, in a sense that with cooperation of more friends, you’ll be able to build bigger houses with better facilities, help each other when going deep into the netherworld, or… you can just kill all of them. PvP is a unique concept in multiplayer, much unlike singleplayer, where you’re all alone.
The game runs perfectly on all netbooks, even those with N270 Atoms and GMA 950s. Graphics isn’t too demanding, but do take note of the minimum specs, you’ll need at least a 1.6Ghz computer to play it well, that’s basically all Atoms except the really old ones. I run an Atom N550 with a GMA 3150, and it runs flawlessly… in fact, I can even run FRAPS to record the video review (below).
The game loads slowly and that can be mildly frustrating, as the worlds are extremely large. But the biggest annoyance is the poor guidance system that will require some patience to get past its steep learning curve. The game does supply you with a Guide (NPC), but he’s quite useless in explaining what’s there to do in Terraria. You’ll be better off going to the Terraria Wiki, which is a great guide-wiki to all your need-to-know about the Terraria world.
All in all, Terraria is a great game for your PC. You really ought to get it if you want a game that runs well, has great replayability and is extremely fun. It also runs perfectly on Atom-based processors which makes it one of the best games for netbooks.
Video Review
Please do give me your frankest comments on the video, so I can improve in the future! I think that we as gamers are too impatient to read a 500-word review, so I’ve done this as a means to succintly tell you everything in less than 3 minutes.
Fixes
Generally, the only problem you’ll face when starting Terraria on a Windows 7 system is the .NET or XNA Framework error which requires you to download the respective updates manually from Microsoft.
Links
Microsoft .NET 4 Download
XNA 4 Download
Other errors that you might face while playing Terraria are covered on the official Terraria website.
