Bored? Flight will entertain you for 40 minutes
Bored? Herping and derping on the web with no real purpose? Then you might want to try Flight, a web-based Flash game that is extremely addictive. Your role in this game is to pilot a paper aeroplane to its destinations around the world – from London to Paris, Kenya to Tokyo.
The game is simple in its mechanics – You do need a mouse to do the initial launch of your paper aeroplane – the more force, the further the paper aeroplane will be able to fly. Then, you keep for fingers crossed and hope that it will be able to catch regular stars that contribute $5 to your coffers or gold stars which will extend your range by giving you more speed.
After each flight, amounting to one virtual day, you will go back to your main menu where you can choose upgrades that will exponentially extend your ability to fly both higher and further. With the money you have, you can buy upgrades such as a “rudder”, which will allow you to pitch your aeroplane, or you can buy upgrades to your plane such that it is lighter and therefore more able to hold itself in the air, or you can buy an upgrade that gives you thrusters so you can accelerate your plane.
With the upgrades, you’ll find yourself going further, faster and higher. At the same time, you’ll be getting richer and richer and more options open up to you. That is when you realize that you’ll want to complete the achievements, which make the game doubly addictive. These achievements are challenges that range from traversing a country in a set amount of days or collecting a set amount of cash in a single flight – there are easy ones but then there are the tough ones which will keep you coming back for more after you’re done with your first playthrough.
The storyline is a bit of a weak one, but it is funny, nonetheless. If you’re patient enough to go through the whole animation sequence, you’ll realize how the meaning of every message enclosed in the paper plane gets ripped apart as people from all around the world put their own misguided (mis)interpretation into the message. If you believe that the medium is the message, then you can probably conclude that paper aeroplanes are a sort of medium that misguides, misleads and gets grossly misinterpreted.
Overall, this game is a true gem. The game will definitely be entertaining for at least one playthrough, although for me, it has been quite a few already, given the difficulty of traversing London in 8-days, which is one of the achievements (hint: buy the crane upgrades ASAP). The game will sustain your attention for at least 40-minutes on one playthrough, depending on how well you play. It is an excellent game when you don’t really want to play a full-fledged game yet have too much time on your hands because someone is late, you were early or because public transport takes too long to get anywhere.
